Have you ever wondered if the supplements you’re taking actually contain what you think they contain?
A recent case of near-fatal liver failure linked to supplements has raised fresh concerns about their safety. On hearing this news I immediately recalled my experience during the COVID-19 pandemic when I experienced an unexplained eight-pound weight loss after taking several supplements. When I stopped, my weight returned, confirming my suspicion that the supplements were the cause. Reports continue to expose supplements that are both ineffective and harmful to the digestive system. Unlike prescription drugs, supplements are not regulated by the FDA for safety or efficacy. This leaves consumers vulnerable to inconsistent quality and unknown side effects. The ingredients, including so-called inert fillers, vary widely from one manufacturer to another. It raises the question: why ingest something when you don’t truly know if it will help or harm you? Maybe it is time for individuals to reevaluate their supplement use and demand stronger oversight. FDA regulation could bring much-needed accountability and transparency to the supplement industry. Until then, caution and skepticism remain wise companions for anyone reaching for the supplement shelf. Are you certain your health has not been affected by supplements?
