I was driving along Pass Road the other day in Biloxi and passed the entrance of the Biloxi National Cemetery/VA. And there flying aside Old Glory, was the so-called “Pride” flag. It was for me an incongruent moment -- somewhat akin to having a bucket of ice water thrown in your face.
It is unavoidable to see this decision as anything other than a provocation to our community at large. A provocation that attempts to celebrate male-on-male anal intercourse, which is what this flag symbolizes. Of course, some say it symbolizes “love the one you love,” or “be who you are.” But this is really disingenuous because if this is what it symbolizes then it would not be owned solely by men who engage in anal intercourse. What militant homosexuals want is to deflect from the sex act that defines a homosexual, and move us in clever ways to embrace that very sex act as normal and genteel. And we know it is anything but normal or genteel. As for me, I see gay and lesbians not as different human beings as they want us to see them. They are, like all of us, people who make their own choices and preferences. A gay man is a regular guy who chooses to have anal intercourse with another man. This is his choice. There really is no such thing as a gay man or lesbian woman. Just because some men enjoy anal intercourse with another man does not anymore make him a different human being than if really enjoying eating makes one an “obesitite,” or having hypertension makes one a “hypertensivite”, a different kind of human. Why not make a special flag for the “obesitites” and “hypertensivites”, respectively, and then have a month for each in which we celebrate their obesity and high blood pressure, parades and all, all the while honoring the “pride” they have “to be who they are.” In making this provocation, the homosexual provocateurs must be ready to accept having it publicly brought to their attention the sexual acts that they themselves claim define them as something of a different human being, if there ever were such a thing. The “Pride” flag flying aside the Stars and Stripes at the entrance of the Biloxi National Cemetery/VA, celebrates the sex act between two men in which one man masturbates inside the rectum of another man. Let’s call it what it is. As disgusting as it is to pen that last sentence, I can’t think of another way to accurately describe it, albeit the celebration of it coming in the form of a colorful little flag. And if that’s not it, then perhaps it may be the celebration of one man masturbating in the mouth of another man. Regardless, I don’t think it unreasonable to call this sort of thing abominable. It is one thing to keep to yourself your personal sexual proclivities, but it’s quite another to provoke others into acknowledging your sexually disorienting acts, all the while being “proud” of it, and then quite another to celebrate it in public, and while you’re doing it, rubbing it in the noses of others. As a result, it’s difficult supporting a business that rubs it in our noses like that, knowing what it truly represents and surmising that that business too supports men who choose and enjoy masturbating in the rectum of other men. But this is the land of the free and the home of the brave, whether it be for priDE MONth, or in the case of certain sports organizations “pride night.” And herein lies the dirty little secret to this entire project cleverly designed to obscure the defining image of one man mounting another. The project must deflect from this act, and so words like “gay” and “pride” are invented along with the colorful little flag. Could it be that the effort is to assuage the apparently ever-present internal personal guilt? Otherwise, why does the project keep pushing forward? The strategy at first was to gain tolerance. Now it is to gain acceptance, support, and then participation. At the end of the day, if a business or person wants to fly the colorful little flag, that’s their prerogative. This is still the land of the free and the home of the brave -- at least it was as of this morning. But we will likely continue to see this colorful little flag, a flag that symbolizes male anal intercourse, a flag that will perpetually symbolize division, not unity; exclusion, not inclusion; and disparity, not equality. In the same way the Confederate flag was offensive to many people, so too this “Pride” flag will always be a divisive symbol in our communities and likewise should be thrown into the dustbin of history. And for the Department of Veterans Affairs to fly a symbol for male anal intercourse next to the Stars and Stripes, itself a symbol of sacrifice, bravery, freedom, and country – and unity -- is as abominable as the act the flag symbolizes; an act that defies intelligence and sanity. May we see it fly less and less and by the grace of God may it fade into oblivion. Meanwhile, keep the faith and hold the line.
